We’re excited to share the revised ICF Code of Ethics (Code), taking effect on April 1. This update reflects our collective commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards. And as a valued ICF member, you’re receiving an advance copy to help you prepare for these changes, understand the revisions, and address any questions you may have.
Key updates include:
- The Code now reflects the entire ICF ecosystem.
- ICF’s core values are included within the body of the Code.
- Standards are reorganized into five clear sections:
- Agreements for Client and/or Sponsor Engagement.
- Confidentiality and Legal Compliance.
- Professional Conduct and Conflicts of Interest.
- Commitment to Delivering Consistent Value.
- Professional Integrity and Accountability.
- An appendix with relevant definitions has been added.
The ICF Code of Ethics is more than a set of guidelines — it’s the foundation of excellence that distinguishes you from other coaches. This living document is reviewed every three years to ensure it has updated language and remains consistent and relevant. The revision process took more than 15 months, with input from ICF members, credential-holders, and stakeholders across the ICF ecosystem.
To help you navigate the revised Code, we’re providing you with updated resources, including an overview of key changes, a complimentary Ethics CCE course on our website, translations, and so much more — all available closer to the April 1 launch.
If you have any questions, please contact Kristin Kelly, director of ethics, compliance, and culture.
